Note: All indexes closed lower to end last week but have been mixed today. The short-term direction for the Dow has slipped into negative territory.
The Daily Nugget
You must understand the market’s “clock speed”.
Most traders only think about direction when breaking down the market.
Is it going up?
Is it going down?
Is the trend bullish or bearish?
But direction is only part of the picture.
You also need to understand the speed of the market.
Sometimes trends develop slowly.
Leadership stays in place for months, and traders have plenty of time to react.
Other times, everything speeds up.
Funds pile into one group…
Cut exposure…
Then rotate somewhere else before most traders realize the first move is over.
That changes how useful certain information is.
In a slower market, last quarter’s fund holdings may still tell you something.
In a fast market, those same holdings may show you stocks the fund has already sold.
The information is accurate.
It’s just late.
And right now, the market’s clock appears to be running much faster than usual.
