Hey friend,
Yesterday’s private sector employment data (unaffected by the government shutdown since it’s compiled by a private payrolls processor)…
Came in surprisingly strong – showing 42,000 jobs added versus 25,000 expected.
We’re getting a lot of “mixed picture” data about the economy, only adding to the uncertainty around the markets.
Let’s see how the indexes have been moving.
The Daily Direction
Note: All indexes closed higher yesterday after Tuesday’s dip – sending the medium-term direction of the Russell 2000 back upward.
The Daily Nugget
The biggest drain on your portfolio are big losses.
This seems obvious…
But the bigger the loss, the harder your other positions have to rise to compensate.
For example, assume you’ve allocated the same amount to all your trades.
If you allow a losing trade to hit, say a 50% loss…
That means you need another trade to post a 50% gain just to break even.
But if you cut that losing trade early, say after it falls 10%…
Then your other position only needs to rise 10% to break even…
While anything after that is pure profit.
That’s why big losses are the biggest drain on your portfolio.
And that leads to two critical lessons.
First – stick to your stop losses. Be disciplined.
